- Durability: Each of the brands we carry are extremely durable and won't scuff easily. Many Pro Predator and NLO Moto riders say that they've been riding for 5 years without a single scuff on their helmets. XFF helmets have 3 coats - some with additional air brushing - to give extra protection against scuffs, for maximum durability.
- Replacement Parts: Pro Predator and NLO Moto will be happy to replace any lost or broken dreadlocks, probably because it is so incredibly rare that a dreadlock would become lost or broken! XFF will directly replace dreadlocks for $35, and replacing a broken visor will cost you about $40.
- Helmet Repair: Every one of the manufacturers we work with will repair a damaged helmet. For Pro Predator and NLO Moto helmets, you'll have to pay shipping both ways to get your helmet repaired. XFF will also do repairs for most damage, but they have never actually had someone make a request for one!
- Sunglass Compatibility: Unfortunately, Pro Predator helmets don't allow room for glasses, nor do most of the NLO Moto ones (with the exception of the newer Predator 4 helmets). All XXF helmets, though, have enough room for you to rock some shades underneath.
- Scala Rider Compatibility: All of our helmets allow the rider to wear a Scala Rider, Sena, Interphone, etc. Communicate away!
- Padding Removal: All of the helmets we carry have removable padding, making cleaning a cinch. XXF helmets have the added benefit of having padding that is hypoallergenic.
Now that we've gotten your attention, let's talk about what you need to know when choosing a motorcycle helmet, hmm?

The first thing that you need to consider is the FIT of your helmet.
A helmet that fits correctly will not only be more comfortable, which is vitally important to your safety as well as sanity, but it will also function better as a shield between your skull and the pavement.
Remember: Unless a helmet is specifically designed to allow cheek-pads and liners to be removed or adjusted, doing so can result in a significant loss of the overall integrity of the helmet. It can also nullify some or all of the helmets warranty.
1. Measure Your Head
Seriously, take the time to measure your noggin BEFORE buying a helmet. It's easiest with a cloth tape measure but you can also use a string and then measure the string against a ruler or metal tape measure.
2. Write Down Your Measurement
Again, seriously. If you're like the rest of us, the minute you sit down to type in the number you've already forgotten it. Save yourself a couple minutes and just jot the number down.
3. Compare Your Measurement to the Size Chart for a SPECIFIC Helmet
Like everything else, every brand has their own size chart. It's important that you're looking at the chart provided for your specific helmet to ensure that you're getting the right size.
4. Do a Little Research
Again, like everything else, despite what the manufacturer lists for their sizes a helmet can sometimes "run" big or small. Look up the comments and reviews for the helmet that you're interested to see what other's have experienced before you place your order.
Always Snug but Never Tight: A Few Things to Keep In Mind about Fit
Your helmet LOVES you and should always HUG your head companionably. Like shoes, wearing your helmet will "break it in" and help it more comfortably conform to your head and cheeks over time. Even the first time you put it on, however, your helmet should not feel uncomfortably tight or cause pressure points. Likewise, your helmet should never be loose enough that it moves independently of your head.
A helmet that is too tight IS NOT MORE SAFE.
If you feel painful pressure points around the crown of your head or cheeks, your helmet is too tight. This may even result in a "high fit".
A high fit is when the top pads of your helmet don't touch the top of your head.
A helmet that is too loose IS NOT MORE COMFORTABLE.
If you look to the left or right but your helmet continues to face forward, your helmet is too loose. A helmet that is too loose can obscure your vision, result in uncomfortable bouncing and vibrations, and other annoyances.
A properly sized helmet will still allow a minimal amount of movement but should "pull" the skin of your face and scalp with it; preventing large movements and rotation.
Should you ever be involved in an accident, you will NOT receive the full protection of your helmet if it's not properly fitted.
The second thing to consider when you're looking to purchase a motorcycle helmet is what safety ratings, standards, or certificates that helmet should (and needs) to have.
There are two core ranking systems for helmet safety in general.
1) Legally Required Standards: Overall, this means that a helmet must be produced with a specified minimum level of safety features by law.
DOT: United States - Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218 (FMVSS No. 218)
Does NOT require certification or quality testing before a manufacturer is able to distribute helmets and depends on manufacturers to use the Honor System. DOT certified helmets are not subject to random certification testing until after distribution.
This makes reputation a very big deal when choosing a DOT Certified helmet and legitimate helmet manufacturers take their reputations very seriously.
* It's important to note that there are significant penalties (thus, significant compliance incentives) for failure to meet DOT standards or for falsely labeling a helmet as meeting DOT standards of up to $5,000 PER Helmet if the helmet is found to be noncompliant.
ECE R22.05: Europe - Economic Commission for Europe Regulation 22.05
Requires mandatory quality and certification batch testing during production and before distribution of helmets by all manufacturers.
ECE R22.05 is the most widely accepted safety certification standard in the world (minimum of 47 countries) due to high safety standards and strict compliance requirements.
ECE R22.05 helmets also meet the safety standard requirements of many professional racing and competition circuits.
*Please note that US States with helmet laws require that any helmets used on public roads be DOT certified. A helmet that is only ECE R22.05 certified, despite having higher safety standards, does not technically meet the requirements of US law.
A US helmet manufacturer may submit their helmets to ECE R22.05 laboratories for testing and, if meeting ECE R22.05 requirements, achieve dual certification (DOT / ECE R22.05) and thus comply with US helmet laws.
2) Third-Party Organization Standards: These organizations allow a helmet manufacturer to VOLUNTARILY submit their helmets for additional safety testing and earn additional certifications. Only if a helmet successfully passing rigorous testing will the helmet receive certification.
Once approved, the manufacturer must then pay for the privilege of displaying that certification (often via permanent label / engraving on each individual helmet).
SHARP: United Kingdom - Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Program; Non-Profit.
SNELL: United States - Snell Memorial Foundation; Non-Profit.
The benefit of seeing a SHARP or SNELL certification linked to your helmet is that both organizations are Non-Profit and Non-Government entities. This means that your helmet meets more than just the "minimum" amount of protection deemed acceptable by a government.
DOT v. ECE
The fact of the matter is that the two certifications are actually very similar. Both DOT and ECE certifications are based on penetration, energy absorption, and retention tests.
For simplicity's sake we're just going to offer the quick and dirty of these tests. The actual tests are, of course, far more technical and advanced than our brief, oversimplified explanations (Duh).
Penetration: The helmet's ability to act as a barrier between your skull and everything else on impact.
Essentially, if your helmet is struck the helmet should never be damaged to the point that an object (ie: the road) ever comes in direct contact with your skull.
Energy Absorption / Impact Attenuation: The helmet's ability to absorb and / or displace the shock of an impact.
A very poor comparison: Remember those commercials where someone is jumping on a mattress next to a full glass of wine but the wineglass doesn't tip over?
That's basically the result of the mattress having good energy absorption and / or displacement properties.
Think of your helmet as the mattress and your brain as the wineglass.
Retention: The helmet's ability to remain on your head on impact.
This test is to measure the strength and effectiveness of the chin strap and d-rings to keep your helmet on your upon impact.
The Main Differences:
DOT standards for certification are more "broad" than ECE standards for certification.
DOT does not test helmets to ensure certification standards are being met before distribution and only after via random tests; manufacturers are able to sell and present their helmets as DOT Certified based on the Honor System.
ECE requires manufacturers to supply batch samples during manufacturing and before distribution before ECE Certification is granted and the helmets can be sold or distributed.
Which is Better?!
In the end, this is one of the most hotly debated questions in the motorcycle world and everyone has their own opinions on the matter of DOT v. ECE.
When all's said and done, it really comes down to personal preference and what you feel is going to protect your brains the best.
No one can know when, or how, or what kind of accident, if any, is in their future.
